Wood Fired Vessel - 37cm / 14.6in High
Wood Fired Vessel: 14.6in (37cm) High x 7.5in (19cm) Wide
Wood firing is an amazing process that creates a beautiful surface that can never be reproduced with exactly the same results ...it may be magic.
This piece was thrown by me on a pottery wheel using stoneware clay. It was then allowed to slowly dry to a "leather hard" state, where I refined the final shape with a pottery trimming tool. After another slow-drying period to allow the piece to achieve "bone dry", the piece was bisque-fired (a low-temp firing to enable handling without easily breaking, but still pourous enough to absorb glaze). At this point the surface was meticulously taped over many (sometimes many, many) hours, glazed by hand, set to dry again, and then the tape was removed. After a round of glaze touch-up and (almost) final clean-up, the piece was loaded into a train-style wood kiln. The firing took almost 30 hours of constant attention with a team of people feeding the kiln a selection of well-placed and timed hard wood to reach a temperature of over 2,300F (1,260C). The atmospheric firing produces a wood ash glaze that coated the surface to create a beatiful, unique finish
