Map Jar on Sheltowee Clay (7 in / 18 cm tall)
Lidded Jar with
7 x 5 in
(18 cm x 13 cm)
This piece was thrown by on a pottery wheel using a red clay. After the initial bisque firing (so that the piece can be handled without breaking) I apply a pattern with thin, vinyl detailing tape. This is all done "free hand" over many hours. Layers of a "nutmeg" glaze are then spray, the tape removed, another round of cleanup, and then the final firing to over 2,000 degrees F (1,090 C). The final firing makes the piece water tight, food and dishwasher safe (though I would wash this piece by hand if possible. I did not apply a liner glaze (inside the jar) because I like to leave natural, raw surfaces to display the original clay (this does not effect the ability to hold water).
For you lid connoisseurs, this has a small amount of wiggle but does not effect functionality.
